What to expect in our therapy sessions
When you start therapy, you might have one more thing to add to your list of worries: therapy itself! During the first few sessions, I make sure to build a safe, welcoming environment where you can feel free to open up and explore the roots of your anxious thoughts. As we get to know each other, we’ll slow things down and work together to find out what it is that is triggering your feelings of worry. Often, we’ll find that the root cause of your anxiety is very different to what you thought before we met.
With the better understanding that you will gain, we’ll get to work using evidence-based techniques to help you control and manage anxious thoughts and behaviors. The exercises we will work on together are often rewarding and empowering. The process of learning to understand how your brain produces feelings of anxiety, and knowing how to respond is very satisfying. You’ll learn a lot about who you are. When you reach your goal, you’ll be in charge of your anxiety; your anxiety won’t be in charge of you.
